What is Botox Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic is the only FDA approved purified protein used to block nerve signals in the face temporarily. By blocking the nerve signals, your facial muscles can relax eliminating or reducing wrinkles and fine lines.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox Cosmetic is injected via a small needle into the small facial muscles. After the injection, Botox will bind to your acetylcholine receptors and in turn, block the signal being sent from nerve to muscle. Within 3 to 5 days, patients should begin to see fewer wrinkles and fine lines and the results will last for up to six months. Untreated facial muscles will be able to continue to contract normally.

Who is A Candidate for Botox?

Patients who are between the ages of 18 to 65 are the ideal candidates for Botox Cosmetic. We do not recommend Botox Cosmetic for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, allergic to any of the ingredients, have undergone a facial surgery, have trouble swallowing, or who are suffering from a skin condition/infection in the area to be treated.

What Happens During Botox Treatments?

Botox Cosmetic treatments are quick and relative pain-free. We will first clean the areas to be injected with Betadine, or similar, product. Next, we will begin the injections. Typically, patients will get injections on each side of the forehead and/or around the eye areas. If an area seems to be bleeding after the injection we will apply a small amount of pressure to help control it.

What Happens After Botox Treatments?

Once your treatment is finished we recommend our patients do not lie down to 2 to 4 hours. Patients need to also avoid using aspirin, or aspirin-like products, to help keep bruising to a minimum. After your appointment, there are no restrictions and you may return to your normal activities.
